After-School Programs for Fall/Winter 2009/2010
In addition to our traditional after-school curriculum (homework assistance,
tutoring, computer lab use and training, ect.), this Fall/Winter we
will also be offering a broad range of programs to help promote the
educational, artistic, emotional, and positive social growth of our
community’s youth. For example:
Book and Writing Clubs:
Students will practice writing skills while exploring ideas and facts
that they find value and interest in. Various writing forms such as
poetry, creative short stories, plays, and interviews will be published
in a community newsletter or preformed by fellow peers. Students will
be encouraged to read as many books as they want. Rewards such as
pizza parties or special activities will be gifted upon reaching a
marked number of books.
Arts and Crafts Projects:
Hand-Building with Clay Workshops – Students will tap into their creative
side by building forms, vessels, and statuettes.
Woodworking/Shop Classes – This career-building project will teach
students basic woodworking and building skills. They will create functional
and interesting pieces while learning how to be a team player.
Seasonal Photo Shoots/Exhibits – Students will be taken on guided
walks throughout our community which will focus on seasonal changes
and help them get in touch with nature and culture. Students will
learn how to use the computer in conjunction with the cameras. They
will also practice writing skills by crafting brief descriptions and
editorials of the photos they’ve taken.
Painting and Drawing – Students will explore different mediums such
as acrylic paints, pastels, and charcoal. They will discover their
own preference of still life or abstract art styles.
Nutrition:
Gardening – Students will experience the rewarding bounty of food
they’ve grown on their own. They will learn how to care for the soil
and proper planting conditions and methods.
Cooking – Students will learn about the importance of a balanced diet
and making healthy choices. They will learn how to prepare meals,
as well as important kitchen facts and procedures.
Mind/Body Awareness:
Students will learn to connect with their bodies through movement
and breathing exercises such as Yoga, Chi Gong, and Do-In. They will
learn how to relieve stress while bringing their bodies and minds
into a state of harmony and balance.
